Is GPTZero Accurate?

To test the GPT Zero accuracy, we conducted an experiment using seven text samples generated by Jasper.ai, a popular AI writing tool. In order to make a fair comparison, we will present the results of GPTZero alongside Originality.ai’s. Before we delve into the results, it’s important to understand how GPTZero presents its findings.

Unlike many other AI content detection tools, GPTZero doesn’t use a probability format. Instead, it provides a general statement indicating whether the text is likely generated by AI or not. Additionally, this tool displays the perplexity score and the burstiness score.

On the other hand, Originality.ai presents its results using percentages. It assesses the originality of the text and determines the percentage that is most likely created by AI. Unlike GPTZero, Originality.ai is trained on multiple language models, specifically GPT-3, GPT-3.5, and ChatGPT.

For the purpose of comparison, we will showcase GPTZero’s perplexity score and statements. Here are the results.

Right from the start, it is evident that the results from this tool are quite perplexing. While the creator provides a clear definition of perplexity, understanding the numerical values presented can be challenging. We can only rely on the statement that higher perplexity indicates a higher likelihood of the text being human-generated.

Based on our testing, we discovered that the perplexity score can reach as high as 30,000. Therefore, our analysis is primarily based on this information, as GPTZero did not achieve 100% detection accuracy in any of the samples. If it had, the app would have displayed the following statement: “Your text is likely to be written entirely by AI.” 

On a positive note, this tool does identify phrases that are likely generated by AI. Here is an example that illustrates this phenomenon. Despite this, the highlighted phrases remain easily understandable.

In general, GPTZero has the ability to identify instances of AI-generated content. However, there is room for improvement in terms of how scores are presented, particularly for educators who need to fully comprehend the extent of AI plagiarism in a given text.

How Does GPTZero Work?

• Training on Big Data: At its core, GPTZero is another AI model. It’s trained on a massive dataset of human-written text and text generated by AI, specifically, those never published online. This helps it recognize the stylistic and structural differences between the two.
• Perplexity and Burstiness: When analyzing text, GPTZero focuses on two key metrics: perplexity and burstiness. Perplexity measures how well a language model predicts the next word. Lower perplexity might indicate AI-written text, as the model might have a more predictable flow. Burstiness refers to the variation in vocabulary used. Human writing tends to have more burstiness, with a wider range of words,  compared to the potentially more uniform style of AI text.
• Multi-Level Analysis: GPTZero analyzes text on multiple levels: sentences, paragraphs, and entire documents. This allows it to pinpoint AI-generated sections within a human-written piece or vice versa. It can also provide a score indicating the overall likelihood of the entire document being AI-written.
